P.S.A.s
P.S.A.s work if advertising works. This has been obvious over the years if you’ve been paying attention. Public service advertisements are ads in the public interest that inform the public about what positive things their society expects of them or hopes them to achieve (or sometimes cover other issues, including negative things that it wishes them to avoid). These ads are often aspirational and tend to contribute to a positive cultural coherence. How many governments currently overlook this problem solving strategy, sometimes in favor of propaganda (which results in a less informed public)? We are looking forward to seeing well-implemented P.S.A. content emerge regarding:
(Note that this is a list including pressing topics and brief discussions pointing out some current features of those topics, and does not necessarily include any specific suggested advertising strategy, slogans, etc. Note also that PSAs should usually not directly depict nor detail undesirable behavior, certainly should never glamorize nor even dramatize it, and should avoid being lurid in general.)
⭔ Manufacturing and Production Standards: Manufacturing and production should result in high quality products that are worth the price and foster pride for the individuals, teams, companies, communities, and economies involved.
⭔ Job Quality: Lately, when we think of the term “job quality” we’re often wondering if a person is compensated enough, but what about quality of output? The customers matter and the public matters: that’s why the job exists. Doing a job for them to high enough standards is important, and it’s part of living in a society. Thank you to everyone who does their job well. You are necessary every day you’re doing what you do.
⭔ Mentoring and Best Practices: Companies run on understanding and maintaining best practices decade after decade. Our research shows that in many industries, workers who were mentored as adults in their jobs by Greatest Generation or Silent Generation workers have often been equipped to be most effective, indicating that those two generations were very good about mentoring. With the Baby Boomer population that benefited from that mentoring starting to retire, many workplaces risk losing their best practices. Mentoring even senior workers in Generation X as well as Millennials and Generation Z workers quickly and effectively is crucial just now. Finding documentation of best practices where they do exist is another possible remedy. Figuring out new best practices from scratch may be deceptively difficult, as best practices are very comprehensive and have been tested for practical efficacy over time.
⭔ Nonviolence: Passive-aggressive violence and overt violence are too common at this point in history, and they are both extremely wrong. Following the path of violence is following one of the worst paths in life. Covering up other people’s crimes is also extremely wrong, and opens someone up to enormous legal liability. Reporting problems is often a crucial step in minimizing serious dangers, including violence.
⭔ Interpersonal Tolerance: If someone says something wrong or makes a minor social gaffe, even on the internet, it can be okay. It’s not necessarily a crisis; maybe it’s more like a learning experience.
⭔ Other P.S.A. topics could include addressing the problem of hate speech, addressing the opioid crisis and its negative effects on families, the steep societal and personal costs of PCP (angel dust) use and crack use, the rise in dementia cases as Baby Boomers advance in years in the age of violent media, promoting civic cooperation projects in communities, crowd etiquette, antibullying, and fostering empathy and respect for people living with poverty and low income mobility.
We at Terra Thesis Institute are desperately underfunded as it is, even in terms of our current operations, but given enough funding, we are quite willing to pick up the slack on one or more of these proposed P.S.A. projects. In the meantime, we have elected to provide this list to the public without delay so that governments and other organizations have access to them. Hopefully we can all see progress on these topics as soon as possible.
Please support Terra Thesis Institute. We’re going to keep brainstorming as long as we can in the meantime…
